Who's made a fast start to the PCL? It's very really days, but here's the team of the round so far....

1) Kraigg Brathwaite (Barbados) 182 runs
2) Devon Smith (Windwards) 80 runs
3) Evin Lewis (Trinidad) 71 runs
4) Jahmar Hamilton (Leewards) 74 runs
5) Narsing Deonarine (Guyana) 110 runs
6) Shane Dowrich (Barbados) 76 runs
7) Nikita Miller (Jamaica) 68 runs & 6 wkts
8) Alston Bobb (Windwards) 75 runs & 11 wkts
9) Damion Jacobs (Jamaica) 7 wkts
10) Dev Bishoo (Guyana) 7 wkts
11) Mervin Mathew (Windwards) 5 wkts

Several players in the Test squad did not play in this first round, for one reason or another, including Darren Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Jerome Taylor, Suleimann Benn, Marlon Samuels and Chadwick Walton. But how did the Test squaddies who actually played fare? Kraigg did very well, Shiv hit a 45, but Ramdin, Blackwood and Leon all failed with the bat. Roach did okayish, taking only four wickets, while Gabriel was mediocre, and Holder was so innocuous that he went wicketless, even in dung heap!

So the CCC team wasn't missed then.

I don't think a single member of last years team participated in this round either.

Let's look at the players who played for the CCC last season....

Shacaya Thomas - couldn't make runs for Jamaica in the first round

Chadwick Walton - opted out

Kyle Corbin - can't make the Bim side

Kevin McClean - the forgotten man

Raymon Reifer - didn't do much for Guyana

Anthony Alleyne - another thrown by the wayside

Steven Jacobs - another reserve

Kavin Hodge - on the sidelines

Dawayne Sealy - who?

Akeem Dewar - can't get in ahead of Jacobs

Jomel Warrican - finally, someone who's actually performing

Floyd Reifer - finally retired

Kesrick Williams - who again?

Justin Greaves - a reserve for the reserves

Ryan Austin - join the queue of dung heap spinners

Jermaine Levy - yawn

Paul Palmer - double yawn

Once again, the team of the round is completely unbalanced. We have so many contenders from the bowlers, as usual, so I've set the bar at the crazy average of 20, and six wickets. We have so few contenders from the batsmen, again as usual, so I've dropped the bar as low as it can go...100 runs and an average of 30.

1) Kraigg Brathwaite (Barbados) 183 runs @ ave of 183
2) Devon Smith (Windwards) 164 runs @ ave of 41
3) Yannick Ottley (Trinidad) 129 runs @ ave of 43
4) Shiv Chanderpaul (Guyana) 155 runs @ ave of 50.33
5) Narsing Deonarine (Guyana) 283 runs @ ave of 141.50 & 6 wkts @ ave of 17
6) Shane Dowrich (Barbados) (wkpr) 76 runs @ ave of 76
7) Alston Bobb (Windwards) 99 runs @ ave of 33 & 13 wkts @ 15.15
8) Imran Khan (Trinidad) 51 runs @ ave of 17 & 13 wkts @ 13.15
9) Damion Jacobs (Jamaica) 7 wkts @ ave of 10.28
10) Veersammy Permaul (Guyana) 16 wkts @ ave of 8.25
11) Mervin Mathew (Windwards) 11 wkts @ ave of 11.45

Players just outside of the team include Yannick Cariah, Jahmar Hamilton, Dev Bishoo, Gavin Tonge, Marquino Mindley, Nikita Miller and Kenroy Peters.

I've raised the bar for batsmen to 125 runs and an average of 40, but only a handful of batsmen have measured up to that untaxing requirement. For the bowlers, it's more draconian - 10 wickets at an average of under 20.

1) Devon Smith (Windwards) 334 runs @ an average of 55.66
2) Kraigg Brathwaite (Barbados) 183 runs @ 183
3) Tamar Lambert (Jamaica) (capt) 170 runs @ 42.50 & 1 wkt
4) Narsing Deonarine (Guyana) 285 runs @ 71.25 & 6 wkts @ 20.33
5) Shiv Chanderpaul (Guyana) 151 runs @ 50.33
6) Shane Dowrich (Barbados) (wkpr) 129 runs @ 43
7) Nikita Miller (Jamaica) 111 runs @ 37 & 13 wkts @ 12.15
8) Imran Khan (Trinidad) 86 runs @ 17.20 & 20 wkts @ 14.50
9) Alston Bobb (Windwards) 99 runs @ 33 & 17 wkts @ 17.52
10) Veeerasammy Permaul (Guyana) 28 wkts @ 8.32!!!
11) Mervin Mathew (Windwards) 11 wkts @ 11.45

Players just outside the team of the round are Austin Richards, Orlando Peters, Tyrone Theophile, Anthony Bramble, Dev Bishoo, Liam Sebastien, Damion Jacobs, Kenroy Peters, Marlon Richards, Dwayne Smith, Marquino Mindley and Rayad Emrit.

And we wonder why Deo play like a canecuttah. this type of inept management decisions
gets to the psyche of the senior players.
Deo and Permaul are 2 former A team Captains !

Welcome back, stumps, and well said....

To give Permaul his due, I'm not his greatest fan, but he's taking wickets. I strongly believe that players for the A team, and replacement players for the Test team, should be drawn from this Team of the Round, based solely on stats in the PCL to date.

Yes, it has been said that Devon is a tried-and-proven failure. But that has also been said about Deo....

The fact remains that no other batsmen has produced with the bat the way Devon and Deo have...this is a serious indictment on the poor performances of our young batsmen, aside from Kraigg, who's already back in the Test side. The top batsmen in the PCL are Devon, Kraigg, Lambert, Deo and Shiv. Not much to choose from!

Here is the team of the PCL after the fourth round. I have set the bar at 175 runs and an average of 35 for batsmen, which is pretty generous, I thought. For the bowlers, I've been harsh - 15 wkts at an average of less than 20.

1) Devon Smith (WI) 334 runs @ an average of 55.66
2) Kraigg Brathwaite (Bdos) 183 runs @ 183
3) Johnson Charles (WI) 262 runs @ 87.33
4) Tamar Lambert (Jam) 223 runs @ 37.16 & 4 wkts
5) Narsing Deonarine (Guy) 306 runs @ 61.20 & 9 wkts @ 20.33
6) Andre Fletcher (WI) (wkpr) 203 runs @ 33.83
7) Nikita Miller (Jam) 178 runs @ 44.50 & 17 wkts @ 14.05
8) Imran Khan (TT) 21 wkts @ 19.61
9) Damion Jacobs (Jam) 18 wkts @ 13.11
10) Veerasammy Permaul (Guy) 32 wkts @ 10.09
11) Dev Bishoo (Guy) 21 wkts @ 19.95

Players just outside the team are Austin Richards, Orlando Peters, Tyrone Theophile, Jahmar Hamilton, Vishal Singh, Yannick Cariah, Chris Barnwell, Roston Chase, Shiv Chanderpaul, Rakheem Cornwall, Alston Bobb, Gavin Tonge, Kenroy Peters, and Mervin Mathew.
