Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was the star attraction at a sold-out meet in Doha last night, where the audience had strong support for Kenyans and Ethiopians. The Jamaican sprinter clocked 11.13 to win the women's 100m ahead of Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare (11.18), with another Jamaican, Kerron Stewart, third in 11.25.

It was a Jamaica 1-2 in the men's 200m, with Nickel Ashmeade winning in 20.13 ahead of Warren Weir's 20.31. There was a shock win in the women's 400m hurdles, with Nigeria-born Bahrain athlete Kemi Adekoya winning in 54.59 ahead of Jamaica's Kaliese Spencer (55.07), Britain's Elidh Child (55.43) and American Lashinda Demus (55.67).

Another Jamaican, Kimberley Williams came third in the women's triple jump with a leap of 14.15, but skipped her last two jumps.

There were a few upsets in the Shanghai DL meet yesterday, but my favourite was Jamaican veteran Novlene Williams-Mills, who battled back from breast cancer and a double-masectomy to win the women's 400m in 50.32, ahead of a number of highly-favoured quarter-milers. Amantle Montsho of Botswana came second in 50.37, Jamaican youngster Stephanie McPherson third in 50.54, and new American sensation Francena McCrorory fourth in 50.57. Another American, the highly-rated Allyson Felix, finished fifth.

Other upset winners included El Rahman in the men's javelin with a throw of 89.21, while Trinidadian Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott finished seventh, China's Xie Wenjung in the 110m hurdles in 13.23, with Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados and Mikel Thomas of Trinidad coming in seventh and eighth respectively, and American Emma Coburn in the women's 3000m steeplechase. The men's 100m was won by Justin Gatlin of the US in a world-leading 9.92 this year, with Jamaican Nesta Carter second in 10.12. Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria won the women's 200m in 22.36, with Bahamian Anthonique Strachan second in 22.50.

Caribbean athletes continued to shine in front of a sold-out crowd at the Eugene Diamond League meet in the US yesterday.

In the best race of the meet, Grenada's Kirani James bounced back to winning ways by edging American Lashawn Merritt in a fast men's 400m, both men clocking 43.97. Jamaica's Novlene Williams-Mills won the women's equivalent in a time of 50.40, ahead of Francena McCrorory of the US (50.53), and another Jamaican, Steph McPherson, third in 50.63, while the minor places went to stars Allyson Felix of the US, Botswana's Amantle Montsho, and another American, Sanya Richards-Ross.

The women's 400m hurdles was won by Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica in a time of 54.29, ahead of American Korri Carter (55.22). Another Jamaican, Shevon Stoddart, came fourth in 56.13. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde of France was the surprise winner of the 110m hurdles in 13.13, ahead of Jamaica's Hansle Parchment (13.20) and American David Oliver (13.21).

American Justin Gatlin won the 100m in a time of 9.91, ahead of Jamaica's Nesta Carter (10.02), Britain's Adam Gemeli (10.07), and Kim Collins of St Kitts-Nevis )10.15). Another American, Tori Bowie, won the women's equivalent in 11.05, ahead of Jamaicans Kerron Stewart (11.08) and Simone Facey (11.13).

The women's hurdles was once again won by Jamaican Kaliese Spencer in a world-leading 53.97.

Hmmm...the Rome spectators didn't seem to like the idea of Gatlin being the top billing for their meet. They stayed away in droves - this is the first DL meet that was poorly attended.
