Rohan Kanhai, my boyhood hero, was undoubtedly the most extraordinary batsman the West Indies has ever produced, one who could eviserate any attack in the world when he chose to. Whereas other batsmen could wear down an attack, Kanhai would dissect it with clinical precision. There was beauty in his craft, so much different in the method of annihilation. Poetry, rather than prose, ballet, rather than dance. Artistry, rather than sheer power, although this never compromised the force with which he hit the ball. He glided in riveting strokeplay, batting with the artistry of a virtuoso.

We all know about the magnificent batting exploits of Rohan Kanhai in Test cricket, but the social significance of his coming and superlative qualities seems lesser appreciated.

When Kanhai made his Test debut in 1957 he was only the second West Indian of East Indian origin to do so, after Sonny Ramadin. He was the first East Indian from Guyana to play Test cricket, despite the outstanding all-round efforts of Chatterpal Persaud. Back then, East Indians simply weren't given a fair break to reach the highest levels of cricket - either in Guyana or the West Indies, because they were considered "too soft for Test cricket" (I am not East Indian, by the way).

For many Guyanese who followed his career from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, he was the closest thing we had to a non-political national hero. For cricket enthusiasts the world over, he was one of the most thrilling, inventive and accomplished batsmen of his generation. Sunil Gavaskar, India's original Little Master before the phenomenon also known as Sachin Tendulkar, named his son, Rohan, in honour of "the greatest batsman" he had ever seen. Thirty-five years since his retirement from international cricket, he is still regarded by those who had the privilege and joy of seeing him bat as one of the all-time greats.
