Right now, as a resident of a British colony, he's playing for Derbyshire as an English player. If he gets into the WI team, he will automatically become an international player, and the counties are only allowed one international player. Derbyshire will be keen for Chesney to remain English as long as possible.

The question is this: will Chesney be keen to give up his county contract to play for the West Indies?
Does playing for the A-team right now make him a "foreign player" though? and with him holding a british passport how can be be deemed a "foreigner" anyway? that rule doesn't make sense, the bottom line is every cricketers aim should be to play Test cricket, that's the ultimate achievement, so if he believes in his own ability then why shouldn't he grab the chance? Darren and Barath have had some tough spells and are still in the team so it's not like he'd be totally discarded if he failed once for WI, if you're good enough you'll be kept in the team,

Plus i'm sure there are other county sides who would be happy to take him on if he plays for WI too, just like Warickshire with Chanders.

Afro, How many current WI players playing county cricket? Chesney is a good prospect but he has better options playing county and for England if he makes it to that level.

Chesney Hughes
Ruel Brathwaite
Maurice Chambers (though he says he wants to play for England)
Chris Jordan

All play county cricket, Jordan is a very promissing Alrounder who England wanted but he got a bad injury and is just coming back to fitness now, Brathwaite did play for CCC but felt he wasn't getting a fair chance so he's gone to county and to be fair he's done ok,

Kelbert Walters trained with the Hamsphire senior team and played for their b team late last year, Vishual Singh and Jason Dawes were also playing English league cricket last year and Carlos Brathwaite played Irish league cricket too, it would be good to see more of our players in county cricket but for some reason they don't get picked up by the county teams, i think Barath, Darren, Roach and Russell would do wonders there, even Bishoo too.

Only Shiv playing county for players on the current team.... Though its good to see the other guys you have listed above keeping active and hopefully develop their game.

Back to Chesney or any young prospects... given the current state of WI cricket.. England is a better option as a career move... West Indies is just chopping and changing in the words of the CEO....chopping n changing. These youngsters needs to be in a professional environment and England is the place.
