Am really happy that badpepper has presented the chance for us to revisit this topc because I have long wanted to explore some thoughts I had about the game itself and some of the wider issues.

Like Googley, I saw a well prepared, exceptionally focussed and professional team take to the field for that game. From the player's demeanour it was clear that they were a tight-knit unit with no slackers in the squad! From the very first ball it was plain to see that there was no way that England was going to win that game. None! And I was damned proud of them!

Whatever was done during the preparation for that game should have been learnt from and every effort made to emulate it. If WI can prepare that way and muster the same spirit and deliver the necessary standard of performance to WIN, it will not be long before they, aka WE, are at the top of the tree in ALL formats of the game!

Yes the swagger was there - and it was all the sweeter to observe as a spectator because it was backed-up by a performance. England was shell-shocked during that game and they didn't like it one bit. They thought they would fly in, play a game and collect a million - but they didn't reckon for Sir Stanford's professional approach to managing a project that would bear his name. And the player's were supremely confident because they knew that they had covered all bases during preparation.

Afterwards, to hear Kevin Peterson talk about how great it was to observe the delight on the faces of the WI players who had come into a massive fortune - otherwise beyond their capability - on the back of winning one game will remain in my memory as one of the most condescending and insulting remarks to have ever been uttered by a sportsman! Implicit in those comments of his is the suggestion that to the England players winning a million was no big deal. Hah! No big deal my ass -who does he think he is kidding?!

I does get fecking vex everytime I remember those remarks of his and every other comment in the English press that seeks to paint Sir Standford as nothing more than a crook. The fact of the matter is that on that night the England team got a good fecking cricket hiding - and it made me feel damned good! And it reminds me just what is possible from those players with the right leadership and preparation.
