AS humiliating as they were–and they don't come more humiliating than all-out 61 in an ODI and desperately hanging on for a draw in a three-day Test against Bangladesh–recent events in Chittagoing were not exactly surprising.

They simply verified the most glaring and troubling truth about West Indies cricket at present. It is the universal inability of batsman to deal with spin bowling.

While the batting on the first day of the second Test, specifically from the young brigade--Kirk Edwards, Kieron Powell and Kraigg Brathwaite--was encouaging, it did not erase worries over spin.

Statistics do not always tell the whole story. In this case, they do. Read More

The answer to the problems with Cricket is hitting all of Us in our faces . unfortunately no One who can do something about it is willing to do something about not only the Pitches , but also instructing our Players that good footwork to spinners is an essential part of batting .

One thing that is always constant and can never change is that once the ball leaves any bowlers
hand he cannot bring it back to his hand , and change the trajectory etc . I think that practising you use One's feet to spinners will give batsmen over time the confidence to use their feet .

I am of the view that it is better to move forward to the balls that are of good length , and either smother the spin or drive it , before its spin get a good grip on the pitch and bring about One's demise .

The real question from my perspective is this : What is being done in the Region , to make our Players feel comfortable in playing Spinners . I recall seeing Sobers batting with Worrell in 1960 vs England in the first Test Match; the English Spinner was troubling Sobers ; Worrell called him down for a mid pitch conference , he took a quick single , and this brought Worrell to face the Spinner . Worrell batted out of his crease , and hit two boundaries , and Sobers followed Worrell's idea of batting out of his crease , and they both lambasted the English Bowlers , Sobers made 226 and Worrell made 190+ runs .

My belief also is that Players must bat with a very positive attitude and have the confidence that they are going to master playing Spin bowling . Apart from his enormous talents Vivian Richards also went to the crease with confidence that none of the bowlers he faced would get the better of him . Unfortunately once our current Players get out twice from Spinners , their confidence is shot , so they go to the crease with fear and trepidation , and that attitude generally brings about their demise .

I think to counteract this , they need to spend hours playing against spinners , and using their feet to get to the pitch of balls unless they are very short . I have no doubt that doing this will help them regain their confidence to play spin bowling .
