Got himself a brilliant ton in the first innings and earned himself five wickets in the match aswell, seems like the yute is really begining to improve now, there's no question that he's a much better batter than Sammy and would strengthen our middle order, he just needs to continue to take wickets though and it won't be long before he's called up again imo.

Yeah, I think Russell did send a message...I wonder how long Gibson can go on protecting Sammy in the side, though, to be fair, Sammy still goes on taking wickets, so it's not easy to push him out right now.

But the FC stats do look interesting....

Russell - batting average 28, bowling average 24 = +4

Sammy - batting average 23, bowling average 26 = -3

So, Russell's FC stats are indeed superior to Sammy's....

Hi, like most people I too feel that Sammy's inclusion as an all-rounder appears to weaken the team, however it is not right to say that Gibson - or anyone for that matter - is protecting Sammy . I think I read a report sometime back which stated that initially Sammy was appointed to be captain for a given period of time - I think one year. For the sake of journalistic integrity and clarity I will try to find a link to substantiate my memory. Were there any other takers for the role at the time?????

Consequently imho it is incorrect to talk about Sammy's inclusion in the team without bearing this factor in mind. As we might recall WI was in a real leadership sh1t-hole at the time of his appointment and I for one feel that he ought to be commended for accepting the poison chalice. These remarks are in no way intended to deny Russell's talents.

For the record I think that Russell is an outstandig talent, however he is still inexperienced. I hope his development continues and that he - and others - has a clear understanding of the precise reasons (flawed or otherwise) why he cannot yet get into the WI squad as an allrounder at this particular time. His time will surely come. Whether or not it will be at the expense of Sammy only time will tell.

Andre Russell is simply showing the potential that we all knew he had already.

It's no secret that Sammy's place in the eleven, compromises the balance of the team, but to be fair to him, he does contribute with wickets, from his military-medium pace. Sammy being made Captain wasn't out of merit, but a political move from the Board, who felt he had the right attitude, work-ethic and enthusiasm to inspire the team, to play for one another.

For me Sammy would be a fringe-player in the test squad and would only start if there was injuries to others. I'd have either Dwayne Bravo or Dinesh Ramdin as the Captain of the West Indies test team and possibly give Sammy the Captaincy in the ODI/T20 formats.

I just hope Andre keeps the pressure on in the next A-team test match, another big score with the bat and a few wickets would really put the cat amoungst pigeons i think  , and whats so impressive about Russell's batting is he's very confident against both spin and pace, that 92 against the Indian spinners in the ODI series earlier this year was just a sight to behold,

I really think having someone like that down the order can only help our batting line-up, he could be the difference between getting rattled out for 180 and getting well over 200 imo, and he's not like Sammy who mainly swings and hopes for the best, Andre actually has intelligence wih the bat and knows how to build an innings.

West Indies A team assistant coach Stuart Williams speaks highly of Russell's performance in the first 'Test'....

Stuart Williams is assistant coach?
Is this a case of a mediocre player becoming a good coach? Or is it a case of our good old-timers not showing interest in this aspect of the game....
