CAPE TOWN: South African fast bowler Dale Steyn will find the "Bull Ring" at Johannesburg the ideal spot to try and equal Dennis Lillee's record for the fastest man to 250 Test wickets from Thursday.
Legendary Australian speedster Lillee, now 62, reached the 250-milestone in his 48th Test, and Steyn stands enticingly on 244 scalps from 47 appearances for South Africa in the five-day game.
Can Steyn equal Lillee's fastest 250 Test wickets record?

Steyn is the best fast-bowler in World cricket at the moment.
I can't think of anybody else i'd give the newball to if i was a test match Captain. Can't really make the comparison to Lille until we access his career, when it's over. But at this present time, there's no doubt that he will be up there with the great fast bowlers of the game's history. With the next test against Australia being at the Wanderers, he'll have to work hard to take his wickets, as it usually favours the batsmen, from what i remember.

i don't think you can compare him with Lillee. the calibe of batsmen during Lillee's time was much higher than today. There are just a handful of top quality batsmen these days, while during the time of LIllee, Thompson, Hadlee, Imran, and the WI bowlers, every team had quality players. they had to raise their level of their game...or its over before you know it!

Googs ..doh blame Dale for not playing in that era. He is here now and we have to go with stats of his time compared with Lillee's time.Googley wrote:BallOil wrote:I think Dale will do it! If so, does that mean he is as good as Lillee or better?

It's a valid point Bally, stats are all well and good to see just how good a individual has been during their careers, but that only tells half the story. In any form of competition, you're only as good (or bad) as the opposition you face.Googley wrote:by now you should know my feeling on stats. Its just part of the formula.![]()
some chaps live and die by it...when convenient!!
An example i'd give is like Greenidge and Haynes, they both averaged in the early/mid 40s in their careers, but i feel that it would be much higher had they been playing in this era.
