linkFifteen children were awarded scholarships during the inaugural christmas dinner of the Daren Ganga Foundation at Petrotrin Staff Club, Pointe-a-Pierre on December 9.
Foundation member Hugh Henderson said that the scholarship drive was geared towards the boys and girls, 9-13 age group, who live and attend schools in and around the Barrackpore area where Daren Ganga is from.
The candidates selected had to have acceptable academic records, as well as an extra-curricular talent which demonstrated definite potential.
The three-year scholarship then provides one-on-one mentorship for each candidate to help with their academics, as well as to give them the necessary coaching needed to excel in their respective discipline.
Foundation president Sheldon Ganga, Daren's brother, said it was a red letter day for the Foundation whose main purpose was to assist youths in realising their full potential, as well as to provide special aid to needy cases.
"These young, deserving people are the stars of tomorrow who ought to grasp the opportunities presented to them with both hands and use the foundation as a stepping stone," Ganga added.
He also noted the Foundation would be monitoring the progress of the candidates and that great accomplishments are expected. He urged them to "dream of being the best and use this programme as a stepping stone to achieve greatness".
