Lara to read eulogy at Carew’s funeral
Former West Indies captain Brian Lara will read the eulogy at the funeral for his former mentor Joey Carew at a service at St. Theresa’s Church, DeVerteuil Street, Woodbrook, Trinidad today.

After Lara scored 277 against Australia, in what was his first Test century, he paid tribute to Carew, noting his efforts at mentoring him

Govt consider honour for Carew
GOVERNMENT will be guided by the family of former West Indies opening batsman Joey Carew about what will be the best way it can honour him. Sports Minister Anil Roberts made this comment yesterday during a news conference at his ministry’s head office on Abercomby Street, Port-of-Spain. Carew, 73, died at his Warren Street, Woodbrook, home last Saturday.

When Australian captain Bill Lawry refused to enforce the follow-on in the final Test in spite of a lead of 340, Carew reckoned it was against the spirit of the game–as did Lawry's deputy Ian Chappell and most other observers.

Joey's response was to ask captain Sobers to place all the fielders on the off-side and he would serve up his straight off-spin feet wide.

"But Joey that would be killing the game," Sobers told him.

"Lawry's killed it already," was Carew's succinct comment.

Sobers did relent partially, placing one man on the leg-side so that Carew sent down five eight-ball overs to a 9-1 field.

That wit was there even when he had to have his leg removed just days before hs death.

Dinanath Ramnarine related that when he visited him in hospital he quipped that he would now have to play everything on the backfoot. Deryck Murray said he told him that, before this, he thought he had come through the worst in life by facing Charlie Griffith and Wes Hall on a fast pitch at Kensington.

There are those who will remember Joey Carew for many things. My most enduring recollections are from that tour of Australia and New Zealand, from Trinidad and Tobago's signal victory over Barbados in 1971 and from our many tete-a-tetes on the ups and downs of West Indies cricket over the past 40 years or so.

yes dat was Carew alright, jokes all the way through. but smart and serious all the same.

the drinking cud have been a problem ultimately as it usually is. he lost a leg which means he was diabetic. rum does that to a lot of westindians.

interesting collection of friends and old players. Andy Ganteume must be at least 100 yeas old. Gibbs is going strong, Murray. its great to see so many peole I used to follow

yuh see Andy bwoy?
he is brown-skin and in 1948 when he scored 112...his only test innings..dat skin and dat french-creole name counted for a great deal in Titty.

yet he get dropped fuh ah white player..on the reasoning that he scored too slow.

he was jess a scapegoat man. they wanted to include players like Rae, Kenny Trestrail, Goddard, Sollmeyer etc., so they had to clear the way fuh dem by cutting down all wud be in, if they had opportunity.

deh wud make it impossible to include those fellas..white bowys all from top families and colleges.

but Ganteume was close enuff. and I am certain he must have gone to St marys college with that name, a big time name, and catholic too.

Ganteumes career and life has been top drawer in trinidad from the first to now.

happy birthday to him anyway...what is he aquarius or still the month before?

Joey’s memory in Minister’s hands
Yet again, we are faced with a situation, where a sporting personality has passed away and records of his performances are either unavailable or inaccessible. On this occasion, it is Michael “Joey” Carew—no ordinary sporting hero, but a man of tremendous value and importance to the cricketing and sporting landscape that is not confined to T&T but spreads across the world. This is a man accredited as being the most knowledgeable in his field over the last 50 years.

yu does take dem stats an dem seriously? I dont! dat is not wat I see with my own eyes...

I see peole living much longer dan dat in the majority...ordinary folk not even the rich ones who have things all right with them.

when yuh enemies want to convince you of tings dat help you to expec' less of yuhself, an' so kill yuhself in the process, you mus' beware of wat deh collect on you, about you, an' tell you dat dat is you.

yuh mus' put up yuh own stats office an' mek sure dat 'deh' doh infiltrate it and control it, so dat the info yuh collect and tell de people is true!
