if yu, in your currentr incarnation had to chose 2 opener from 3..Haynes, greenidge and baichan whpo wud you chose?
dont you see how masterful haynes was man..from the start! shots all round, yet an ability to adapt.
and greenidge..... power, defence, ability against all save extrme pace at the start of his career, a problem he overcame after Lillee and the Oz. soon extreme pace was no problem and he cut everybody arse consistently.
Baichan was not up in dat league. he was good, his forte paitience, his stock in trade defence. but haynes and greenidge had plenty of that and cud score too...in big ways.
dats the way I looked at it. I saw baichans ton and was impressed. but before I claim anything at all I must allow for genuine diferences of opinion on which selections are based.
so much has been siad of these current selectors but Bishoo is in the side, Rampaul is now #1, deh persisted with Sars and Shive, Barath is first choice opener
and westindies selection due to the short cricketing seasons is based more on considered selectoral opinion than all other cricket nations. we have had no choice.
so mistakes have been made but a whole lot of success have been achieved. westindies have produced gems by the ton, as opposed to failures, based on selectoral opinion alone.
juss look at Kirk Edwards. deh persisted with him and most of us here wud not have. I wud not have picked him at all. but deh persited and deh were right.
yuh simply must take soemthings in sride man, see it for what it is on wat it has been. the judgement in those days were for haynes and greenidge. that worked out into the one of the greatest pairs of openers in the hisory of the game. case closed
