ARRITE....

Baichan made his debut around 1972 and for the next 2-3 years scored very well in shell shield,,3-4 tons etc. but at the same time there were really brilliant bastmen emerging with whom the westindies had to do soemthing.

early in the seventies westindies farted around with fredericks, Carew, Comacho and GA greenidlge. but baichan came about in 1972 just as Rowe and kalliecharan were emerging and maurice Foster was scoring tons and tons of runs for jamaica.

Lloyd was here as well, along with aging Sobers and kanhai who cud play until deh decided to quit.

fredefricks became established, westindies tried RGA headley in england in 1973, for his english experience...one year into baichans FC career. and in 1974 CG greenidge was selected for his extreme ability demonstrated in a deluge of runs in english county cricket.

these are fact I have scoured from memory. quickly greenidge and Fredericks became established after the blip against Lillee and the Oz 4-prong. somewhere in here baichan got a chance and scored a ton against Pak then failed against.

by 1978 when haynes was picked out of the blue on fredeicks retirement there were several possibilites who cud have been selected instead..including baichan. LLoyd was the captain and the power in westindies cricket. HE WAS THE ONE WHO DECIDED ON HAYNES WHOSE RECORD BY THEN WAS HADLY SUBSTANTIAL, INCLDUING SEVERAL GIG FIFTIES

that is why I said it was a choice. Lloyd and company decided on Haynes, stuck with him and it worked out..a prefference or preferred a certain selection

at dat time they cud have selected basil Williams who had established a strong regional record..or Herbert Chang who had done likewise..or Desmond Lewis, or GA Greenidge..even a very young Faud bacchus, or baichan...

deh choose haynes!

there are many instances in westindies cricket when the white men were in chage deh did the same thing. when black men got involved in selection and had power deh continued that practice...

look at how deh stuck with Kirk Edwards here against the general contrary opinion in the region and across all the message boards...

when Viv sos for Dwayne /smith from Bim we all jumped all over him..only for dwayne to blast the saffie bowling. ultimately Dwayne did not work out but the principle is estabnlished in which ability is judged and players often selected on dat alone..rather than on big scores

the selectors stuck with Shive and sars...

sars failed but all the selectors did this season worked out well enuff...Bishoo, Sammy as captain, the recall of edwards

well dat is wat westindies selectors have done from the start and in doing dso eh have a recored of success that is very significant indeed

and his is the most significant factor of all..

WHEN BAICHAN EMERGED IN 1970-72 HE WAS 24-24 YEARS OF AGE. BY THE RETIRMENT OF FREDERICKS IN 1978. COUNTING FROM 1972, BAICHAN WAS 32 YEARS OLD. BY THE TIME HE SCORED HIS PAKISTAN TON HE WAS 27-28.

SO THE EARLIEST BAICHAN CUD HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR THE WESTINDIES WAS 1972, HIS FIRST REAL SEASON WHEN HE DISPLAYED TALENT. BUT HE HAD TO DEAL THEN WITH ROWE, FREDERICKS, FOSTER.

THERE IS NO WAY ANYONE AT ALL WUD GET IN TO OPEN BEFORE THOSE 3 AT THAT TIME. AND AFTER THAT WE HAVE THE EMERGENCE OF GREENIDGE. AND IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY BAICHAN PLAYED IN PAK DUE TO INJURY OR OTHERWISE THE ABSENCE OF GREENIDGE, AFTER THE INDIAN PART OF THAT TOUR.

DEN GREENIDGE CAME BACK FOR OZ, FAILED AND WESTINDIES INSETED FIRST JULIEN DEN VIV AS OPENER WITH FREDERICKS, BEFORE INSERTING BAICHAN AT #3 FOR THE LAST TEST OF DAT SERIES. BAICHAN WAS 30 YEARS BY THEN..ALMOST 31.

SO DATS IS WHY DEH PICKED HAYNES IN 1978. HE WAS PROLLY THE YOUNGEST POSSIBNILITY THEN AND HAD DEMONSTRATED ENUFF FOR THE SELECOTRS SO DEH WENT WITH HIM. BY 1978 bAICHAN WAS 32 YEARS OF AGE

DATS THE STORY!

baichan rose when fredricks, comacho and carew were preferred. then fredericks, Rowe, greenidge and haynes, with a few interims were preferred.

baicah alos rose to promines at later ages which was not good for him at all. had he been scoring sine he was 17-18 he might have slipped in and established himself. at dat time it was not good to emerge at 24 as a prospect
