ARRITE....
Baichan made his debut around 1972 and for the next 2-3 years scored very well in shell shield,,3-4 tons etc. but at the same time there were really brilliant bastmen emerging with whom the westindies had to do soemthing.
early in the seventies westindies farted around with fredericks, Carew, Comacho and GA greenidlge. but baichan came about in 1972 just as Rowe and kalliecharan were emerging and maurice Foster was scoring tons and tons of runs for jamaica.
Lloyd was here as well, along with aging Sobers and kanhai who cud play until deh decided to quit.
fredefricks became established, westindies tried RGA headley in england in 1973, for his english experience...one year into baichans FC career. and in 1974 CG greenidge was selected for his extreme ability demonstrated in a deluge of runs in english county cricket.
these are fact I have scoured from memory. quickly greenidge and Fredericks became established after the blip against Lillee and the Oz 4-prong. somewhere in here baichan got a chance and scored a ton against Pak then failed against.
by 1978 when haynes was picked out of the blue on fredeicks retirement there were several possibilites who cud have been selected instead..including baichan. LLoyd was the captain and the power in westindies cricket. HE WAS THE ONE WHO DECIDED ON HAYNES WHOSE RECORD BY THEN WAS HADLY SUBSTANTIAL, INCLDUING SEVERAL GIG FIFTIES
that is why I said it was a choice. Lloyd and company decided on Haynes, stuck with him and it worked out..a prefference or preferred a certain selection
