I must say that darren Sammy is a player I have always liked. I have always been impressed by the young man as sound, sane, stable...altogether a personality anyone would love to have in a son!

I dont kow sammy personally and i may be wrong about him, but that is the clear impression of have of him, and I have heard nothing of him that would change my mind.

let me see if I can build a case for sammy.

to start with this passion thing is nonsense, immeasrable and so hardly a basic factor you would list in decidng on a leader. if its there, people think its there, it must be an unspoken factor in the caculations for it cant be measured.

the first factor is if the player is top class and can make the side on ability. can sammy really not make the westindian side ..or, he cant make it over Bravo, and would have a tussle with the jamaican david Bernard?

that to my mind, looking at the question a second time, is more the equation than 'he cant make the side.'

as for experience Sammy is not without experience at the highest level. he has been in and around westindies cricket at the top for some time but cannot make the side over Bravo in particular.

but we are forgetting that sammy took a lot of wickets in his first test in england when the conditions suited his bowling. and that is an indication of test class. and since then in his limited opportunities Sammy has done well enough to suggest he woud do well enough relative to his class should he make the top side consistently.

but sammy cannot make the top side because he is not better than Bravo, in fact far from it. and in as much as he is a lesser Bravo there is no point to the 2 of them being in the side. and david bernard looms all the time as well in the argument.

the problem is how to regularise Sammys place in the side without weakening it. the side becomes unbalanced with both Bravo and Sammy in there...and to drop bravo makes no sense.

Sammy would then have to take the place of a bowler, and there in the bowling, for a moment there seems to be a place and balance to the side with sammy in it.

we have only roach, pascal and russell in the side now. is Tonge still in there?

but the bowling decidely weak should comprise Roach and another fast man, to which complement sammy vould become third pacer, along with benn and Shillingford. or Sammy actually becomes first change bowler with Roach and Bravo using the new ball.

doing it that way, the side could be, smith, gayle, lil barath, shive , sknash, Bravo, a keeper, sammy, Benn, shillingford, Roach

so the side would not be weakend by a drop of Bravo for sammy as captain and retain balance.

but that still depends on if such as Russell, clearly a young player of immense ability, does not shine. if he does and must be, or ought to be included..and is not because of sammy as captain.. then we have a problem.

so in trying to make a case fo sammy I may end up proving that such a weakening of the team is unavoidable with his inclusion as captain.

sammy as established earlier, is a decent average player who we can expect would give his best at all times. but have we seen his full potential? if so, then he cant improve and there are many others who can.

especially in conditions which suit his bowling we will get something from sammy, but there are players around like Russell who are better and likely to explode into top class players.

so for sammy to remain a viable propostion none of the other potentials must explode into top class and so not pose a challenge to his place and leadership. that of course weakens westindies cricket.

it would be much better to have the full developed potentials of nealon pascal and Russell , bowling much faster than sammy can, in the attack

nice post Mapoui 8-) I thought you were losing it earlier.. :)

so if passion is not a quantitative substance why the fact them chatting crap? some people show their enthusiasm while others can control it or even hide it. Does that make a person a better player or leader? NO!

is "passion" the new buzzword the WICB picked up after paying millions to some marketing company?

This dog and pony show is just another hoax to fool the people they actually doing something. The results from the tour will tell the TRUE story. :)
