Brian Lara's return to competitive cricket has been welcomed by former West Indies cricketers Joey Carew and Deryck Murray who both believe that the batting legend can still make a positive contribution to Trinidad and Tobago, and by extension West Indies cricket.

Speaking to the Express yesterday, Murray and Carew endorsed the move by Lara to play for Southern Rocks in Zimbabwe's Stanbic Bank Twenty20 competition and insisted that the batting genius still had what it takes to be competitive in the shortest version of the game.

Murray, a former West Indies wicketkeeper, was not surprised that Lara is making a return to game. Rather, he was expecting it to happen earlier.

"I am surprised that it did not happen sooner and I expect that other franchises will soon be looking to sign him up," Murray said.

"I think he is certainly fit enough and good enough to make a contribution and I hope he can make a contribution in regional and domestic cricket. You don't want his experience to be lost to the next generation," Murray added.

Carew, a former Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies opening batsman and West Indies Cricket Board selector, was also expecting the move by Lara. "I think it is a great idea," he said.

"Just to recognise and realise that the great man is back on the scene again and to read about his exploits in Zimbabwe would be great," Carew added.

"There is absolutely nothing wrong with the idea (of Lara playing in Zimbabwe) but I am concerned that he has not played competitive cricket for two or three years," he said.

"While it will take a normal player a while to get back into the groove, anything is possible with Lara. He can just come in and play a great innings."

Good luck to the Prince Of Port Of Spain .

The best I ever saw was Sir Rohan Kanhai .

Lara you will always be second best only because I saw him batting first. Hooking bouncers ending on his butt amazing to see in Person .

Lara those dancing feet and precision placement after you hit those balls , only the gods give those gifts to few and they are far between .One like you comes once per lifetime.

I was fortunate , an error occurred I saw two in my life to date.
