moreFormer West Indies wicketkeeper Deryck Murray is hoping batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan and wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin will be motivated to set higher standards for themselves after being snubbed for retainer contracts by the WICB and being omitted from the team’s tour of Sri Lanka.
Following their break from international cricket, the pair was included in the West Indies’ 30-man preparation squad ahead of the forthcoming ICC World Cup in the Indian subcontinent beginning in February.
Murray said the selectors’ controversial decision to drop Sarwan and Ramdin could have two possible outcomes. “They must have been very disappointed to have been left out of the tour and not to have been given a retainer contract,” he told the T&T Guardian this week. “Something like that could provoke two different types of reactions: One, it will be allowed to fester in them as despondency, which would be very detrimental, or two, they would feel that they have something to prove to the selectors and would work even harder on their games. I hope it’s the latter since the team will be a lot stronger if they play to their potential.”
Murray, who served two terms as President of the T&T Cricket Board from 2005-2009, said it would have been difficult to omit the pair at this point in the selection process. “It would have been virtually impossible to leave them out of the 30-man squad. It’s not very surprising, but at this stage it’s not particularly significant. It will be interesting to see who makes the final squad.”
