a truly great one transitions!
Alexander was one of the very best westindian cricketers ever. he shud go down as the second best keeper in terms of abilit... to Hendricks the best ever...and the best ever in terms of length of service, quality and achievement.
Dujon is prolly rated higher but Alexander in my book was the better player.
Alexander was also a world class soccer player, for cambridge university and the westindies.
the westindian guard is truly changing!
I held Alexander responsible for the way Gilchrist was treated. later i came to understand and forgive, though never to agree that it was worth ruining Gilchrist and wasting a tremendous career for the westindies.
but overall Aleaxander was a good man..even a great westindian, more a victim of the evil of his society than the any evil in his soul!
and of course alexander wasnt truly white but high brownskin...a major factor in the terrible westindian racial reality
RIP

nice post Mapoui... I thought you mentioned back in the days white and brown players were given the nod over others... Now you writing that Hendricks and Alexander were the best keepers..
Alexander looked like he was a rounded individual, excellent in sports, academics, society, etc

some of the white players were good, world class. we have to try for the whole truth so where deh were top class we have to say so.
Stollmeyer was a racist brute but he was truly world class as a batsman, tuff, resolute.
Gomez in his best days was a hard player, never say die...a very hard figther.
the first Grant was ordinary but a sound cappo ultimately, and a hard fighter with the bat.
Richard Edwards was a decent fast bolwer with a fluid action but he could not displace Hall, Griffith and Chester Watson,Lester King.
Hendricks and Alexander were absolute world class, 2 of the best keepers test cricket has ever produced.
and of course way back tim tarilton and George Challenor were the real deal...Challenor in particular.
strange as it may seem it is Challenor who set the westindian batting style that has become famous the world over as westindies most unique contribution to the game.
I have nutten against dem fellas. yu must remember it is deh who had and have the power not me. what happen is wat dem do, not me. I am jess saying it like it is, what i have actually lived and seen.. and what I wud do had I the say..especially in the case of sknash

and also if yu doh know..and as I have talked about here many times, it is about the westindies and all involved in the life we have had and have.
white westindians have been awful generally, but they are part of the westindies... and those who stayed with independence were welcomed to. no one questioned their credentials. that was out of the question, not even a question.
a lot of white westindians live the part. Joey carew who just died was a a universal favourite and one of the good players who may said to have been white. Joey did not get a favourites pik but a considered and deserved pik.
another universal fave in Titty is Willie Rodriguez. ley me tell you that Rodrigues is so much westindian he may have gotten punished for it.
in the New Zealand bacchanal when Holding kick down stumps an' ting Rodriguez as manager stood up for the players strong strong. a lot of people in his place wud not have stood up so manfully..the way a true citizen wud behave.
Stollmeyer and dem never gave Willie another manager stint. and the only reason why is because he stood up for the players. he was a players manager.
Willie and dem did not run, bad-talking the westindies all the way. they stayed home and lived among the people. there are those who ran and when they saw they could come back and exploit the westindies that is what they have done.
I would not have allowed it to happen thats all. esepcially when that person... Sknash.... was already 30 years old and the prospects of him staying on in the westindies to work and live afterwards are are nil. it is a shame and a waste of time to invest a place, time and money in such an individual, who is not a world-beater as a player, who can help us win now or help us to maintain place... when that place in the team could have gone to a young westindian who may turn it into a career that benefits the westindies greatly as player, citizen.... all-round contributor socially over a lifetime.
there is no way sknash is deserving of the treatment he has gotten in the westindies. were I the one in charge it could never have happened. thats all!

and gerry alexander too.
although I am sure he knew the senior sknashes personally I feel confident he wud never have agreed to promote the lil one over westindians who ketch deh rarse in the westindies trying to make ends meet, to eke out a chance for a son here and there, who had some talent.
I met gerry Alexander in Antigua in the westindies around 1986. he was travelling all over in projects to help in the agricultural development of the region, he was a powerfully natural and gregarious person, commited to the westindies.
Alexander was class all the way. there is no way he would do anything but what he thought benefitted the region in whatever job he held in which the interests of the region was his concern

I have said all this and more here.
I pointed out how Geroge Challenor became a school teacher and taught in the eastern casribbean, taught lil blac children in Grenada and Barbados.
I drew attention to James discription of the relationship between trinidad whites and regular trinidadians...like Mervyn Grell for example.
there was a lot of racism and that i never tolerated, fought back and speak of openly. but I spoke and speak of everything else the same way. I dont hate white pople..or any people. I dont have time for that...only for the truth and trying to make things better.
allyuh have to look at the life out of which we came you know. it is as if allyuh did not live what I lived day to day, saw what i saw routinely. there is a westindies and in that context allyuh shud try to see what I actually mean when I say something..as I try to understand allyuh.
I know allyuh time different, up the road a bit from mine. yet still it is the same westindies and what allyuh are came out of what made me. i understand the change a bit and what I knew is still there but allyuh ignoring it and that wont pay

I believe the error was in not choosing to select Gilchrist ever again. When he made those errors, he was an angry young 20-odd year old, and who among us can say that we were never in his shoes at that age!
Also, he went on to play league cricket in Lancashire, and though he bowled bouncers there, he was not penalised - as far as we can see - for bowling beamers there. Yes, his use of the bouncer was probably not acceptable for the gentle times of the 1960s, especially by a black man against a white man. But was it any different from Lillee and Thomson, and our own pace quartets of the 1980s?
Frank Worrell wanted to give Gilchrist a second chance, but the selectors turned him down....
