It seems that it was only a matter of time that Gayle would sign for an IPL team....
It seems that this has been building up, ever since gayle was passed over for a bid by the IPL teams at the auction.

West Indian opener Chris Gayle joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore camp here on Tuesday morning as a replacement for the injured paceman Dirk Nannes.
There could have been a technical glitch in getting Gayle, who went unsold at the January auction, as his reserve price-tag of $400,000 was above Nannes’ $200,000 and as a rule only a player, whose base price is equal or less than that of the Australian, could have replaced him. But since Nannes eventually was bought for $6,50,000 (way above Gayle’s base price) by RCB, roping in the Windies’ left-hander became easier for the Bangalore side.

There's still a hurdle to overcome....

"The Gayle issue is complicated because all international players require an NOC from their home board before they can play in the IPL, even if, like Gayle, they are not under contract to their Board. As of now, Gayle has informed the WICB that he is not available for the West Indies versus Pakistan series and wanted to honour his IPL contract during the same period. ESPNcricinfo understands, however, that until Gayle's request for an NOC, the WICB was under the impression that Gayle was recovering from an injury."
