Why the West Indies Can't Afford Its Own Cricket Players

When Darren Bravo walked out to bat in Guyana for the West Indies in the first test of their series against Pakistan this month, his brother was nowhere to be seen. Bravo's better-known older sibling, Dwayne, wasn't injured, though. Instead, just 30 minutes after the test started, he turned out for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

West Indies won that cricket match—their first test win in nearly two years—and are struggling in the second, at St. Kitts. A rare win on a Guyana pitch so treacherous that it made batting a lottery against a team with a host of well-documented troubles of its own is all very well. But it's unlikely to become a pattern, for the very simple reason that the West Indies can't keep hold of players like Bravo Senior. A first-choice West Indies 11 would be a formidable outfit, but no one can remember the last time they fielded one. Read more

the WSJ article is interesting indeed. I never knew deh posted cricket.

lord states the case well but is too negative as to solution. Lord might be correct being pessimisic about the wicb as capabple of solving the problem. but dat does not mean there is no positive answer.

look at hunte an dem re-organisng the whole westindies season to suit ICC. we now play cricket well into june-july to suit ICC needs. well what about westindian needs?

reorganisation is the name of the game and everything shud be on the table in the reorganisatin that must come...hopefully sooner and not later...and does not invole assholes like hunte and hilaire...indeed the whole bunch of incompetents now part of the wicb admin

the wicb must reorganise to allow the players to feast internationally...all who can get contracts.

westindies ICC schedule must not coincide with the big bashers so the players can make money and also play for the regin.

it is as simple as dat. If the ICC doh like it let deh go suck an egg. deh must compromise to save the westindies

so between IPL and BB in Oz no international commitments for the westindies.

when the IPL and OZ BB is done the payers come home, relax for a couple fo weeks and go into intense dung heap, ODI and T20....as well as receive an international tour

we can even see if we can mount our own version of a monied T20, to which we might invite available outsiders.

so no tours between december and January - BB. and no Tours during the IPL in late April to june.

dat does not seem an insourmountable problem at all. all players hired will make their money and would be available to the westindies. and the wicb can go on focusing on development programms, pay the players the best they can without the worry of clashes and strikes.

any westindian administration dat begins to use international money to feed our players in this way will be smart enuff to ressurect our cricket. instead of fighting the players and the new developments, adjust and use the aituation to the best advantage of the wicb and the development of westindies cricket.

I mean if the players can make a million+ per year and you doh have to pay them, isnt dat an advantage? deh wud be happy, get the langniappe you pay dem and all wud be swell.

yu no longer standing in their way but facilitating their financial develpment which wud also be good for the region given the millions our players will be bringing back every year to help drive the regional economy however little... or big.

everything helps

wat wud a westinaind season look like?

first he wicb would have to changet he qualification rules for selection so dat palyers do not necessarily have to play in dung heap to be considered.

if deh do not play in dung heap the wicb has opportunity to develop even more players who can go into the world to make large sums of money.

so december to January the BB can easily be segued into an Oz tour as may be properly scheduled by the ICC.

the Ipl starts in april dat gives the westindian season for tours a 2 and a half month opportuity to fit in a tour of several tests matches, ODI and T20. we then must consider how to use the remainder of months in the year up to december and the BB
