I was watching the Sri Lanka-England Test match, and during the rain break, Michael Holding was talking about the Gayle issue with David Gower and Shane Warne. He made some interesting points:
1) An important person in the WICB setup at the meeting has made it clear that if Gayle gets back into the side, he's off. Holding didn't call any names, but I don't think he was referring to Hunte or Hilaire. Could it be Gibson? Gower asked Holding which of the two individuals was more important, and Holding said "Gayle"....
2) Holding said that Chris Gayle is a hard man to manage. However, he said that individuals whom he respects have no difficulty managing him. For example, when Clive Lloyd managed a WI team, he came back with a glowing report on Gayle. It seems gayle has respect for Lloyd, but not for a certain other unnamed person....
3) Holding said that the WICB mismanaged the Gayle issue during Pakistan's tour. He said that Gayle was not picked for the first few ODIs, and when Gayle asked what are the selectors plans for him (as they had announced plans for Bravo and Pollard), they couldn't tell him. Then, when he asked to play in the IPL, they refused an NOC. Then, the confrontation happened, and the WICB backed down.
4) Holding says that Gayle's error was in whom he took into the meeting to support his case. From that stage, it was clear that no resolution would be found.
5) Holding said that Gayle doesn't need the money from the WICB to get by, because of what he's earning from the IPL. But he wants to play for the Windies, but won't put up with being disrespected.
6) Warne says that the WICB need to seek out a middle-ground where they can both agree, and get Gayle back into the side. But he doesn't think the administrators can be flexible enough to have Windies cricket as their main interest.
Ah no me say so....I'm just listening to what Holding has to say.
Jack Mandora....
