More Laps: reality check for Brathwaite and U-19 team?

Kraigg Brathwaite was given the unenviable task of choosing between a rock and a hard place. Having lost their final group stage game to the Indians by 81 runs, the West Indies under-19 skipper was punished — yes, punished — by his team manager, Courtney Walsh. Brathwaite could either run five laps around the boundary ropes, or join his teammates in two rounds plus push-ups of the embarrassing kind on the field.
So while the Indians cooled down peacefully on the outfield, 10 panting West Indians slowed down to a halt to collect their breath — thanks to more exercise after an exhausting match. Brathwaite, though, chugged along on a mission. As his mind cleared on the third lap, he put his day’s returns, a three-ball duck, behind him. And with every energetic stride that he hit after that, his mind also raced towards his goal: that of playing 100 Test matches for the West Indies.
“I was thinking of my ambition, and suddenly running those laps became easy,” Brathwaite, 18, says. “And instead of looking at it as punishment, I just looked at it as getting fitter for the next game,” the Bajan adds, with a tired but happy smile. Read more
