Looking at this from a WI perspective the answer appears to be the late Malcolm Marshall with 33 in a six test match series in 1983/1984. See the cricinfo stats here. Interestingly, looking at the 3 test series stats, Marshall also leads the way with 19 wickets. The best returns for a spinner looks like Alf Valentine with 28 in 1952/1953 having bowled 430 overs in a five match series. Thinking of spinners the performances of Lance Gibbs are also noteworthy because he is number 2 in home series and number one in away series. For India Ishant Sharma has the best 3 match series returns with 22.

Andy Roberts did well with 32 wickets and Wes Hall 30 in 5 match series away too...

The road warriors are Marshall, Roberts and Hall
